vfxjunkies – feeds – Truth about resolution and pixels –

This is a recent thought bubble from one of vfxjunkies on the RED 4K on color sampling and comparsion.

rahul venugopal

Last week our team had a presentation on RED workflow from good people at Icerber Design here in Singapore. The key issues we discussed at the end were 4:2:2 color sampling and advantage of 10 bit log space of Red workflow. While advantage of 10 bit log space is almost similar to a film workflow but the compromise we would make would be on the quality of the image. READ MORE

VFX supervision | rethinkfx – insight tips on Vfx Supervision

Interesting tips on vfx supervision by Ben Cowell.

This is an attempt to explain the live action shooting process for VFX supervisors. Many people trained in 3D and Compositing have never stepped foot onto a tv or film set and it can be quite unnerving. Whilst there’s nothing like experience I hope this guide can help smooth out some of the jargon and complexities.CLIK HERE TO READ MORE ON THE ARTICLE …

Professional 2K image sequence playback – Internet diggs

Interesting information diggs on the 2k image sequence playback have thrown lots of light into the technology available in the current scenerio. The requirements any VFX studio would be to playback the 2k Full high res image cacheing and playback in real time through network streaming or direct streaming from local hard disk. Basic studio requirements would be

1.speed in streaming and reading high res 2k image sequence.

2.with support for playback of high density image formats

3.Support Multiple image formats cin,dpx,hdr,tiff,tga,iff,sgi,rgb,jpg…

4.Multiple OS support- windows,linux,Mac OSX

5.exposure and image colour corrections tweaks.

6.image reference notes to be drawn on the frame for review sharing.

7.internet support.

all these have narrowed down to few poppular technology findinds in vfx domain. They are

1.DJV imaging – free player available and  the best open source

2.pdplayer – from chaos group – will be the most versatile player.

3. Tweak software RVReview – very technical gadget to play with

4. IRIDAS Frame Cycler – popular 2k sequence playback available

5.  jahshaka player

if you guys have anything to add up to this list. kindly send in your comments.

Irradiance Environment Maps by Ravi Ramamoorthi/Pat Hanrahan

Googling for research papers on Technology behind VFX, gave this usefull links. This is first part of my technology explorations and Future.

Lighting in most real scenes is complex, coming from a variety of sources including area lights and large continuous lighting distributions like skylight. But current graphics hardware only supports point or directional light sources. One reason is the lack of simple procedural formulas for general lighting distributions. Instead, an integration over the upper hemisphere must be done for each pixel.

We present such a simple formula for diffuse objects, i.e. for the irradiance. The key to our approach is the rapid computation of an analytic approximation to the irradiance environment map. For rendering, we demonstrate a simple procedural algorithm that runs at interactive frame rates, and is amenable to hardware implementation. No texture-mapping is required for the irradiance with our approach.

John Dykstra on his favorite scene – the opening shot in ‘Star Wars’

Click on the image for full interview

Two-time Oscar winner John Dykstra is considered one of the true forefathers of visual effects. His credits include “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” “Batman Forever” and “Hancock” and was a producer at the launch of the original “Battlestar Galactica” television franchise. He won his first Oscar for the original “Star Wars,” for which he was special photographic-effects supervisor, and his second for “Spider-Man 2” and is now immersed in the challenges presented by period combat as the visual effects designer on the Quentin Tarantino film “Inglourious Basterds.” He was on the set in Berlin when he spoke to Bradner by phone.

This is the third installment in our series “Wizards of Hollywood,” where we shine a spotlight on the masters of movie magic, the effects specialists who can dazzle us with screen images of liquid robots, giants and goblins, ferocious dinosaurs or just a special human soul who ages in reverse. Today, guest contributor Liesl Bradner interviews John Dykstra.
